As a full-time teacher and mother of 3, my schedule is often jam-packed with running around for their activities as well as chores, errands, meal prep and everything else on my plate! This constant list of things to do and places to go can cause feelings of stress and anxiety! In today’s fast-paced world, stress has become a common part of life. Whether it’s work deadlines, family responsibilities, or everyday challenges, finding ways to manage stress is essential for overall well-being. Fortunately, there are simple and enjoyable activities that can help you relax, refocus, and restore your peace of mind. Let’s explore some of the best ways to relieve stress, including exercise, walking, reading, and coloring. It’s so important to take some time for yourself and find ways to relax and relieve stress and anxiety.
1. Move Your Body: Exercise for Stress Relief
You already know this is my number one way to help with stress. Physical activity is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress. Exercise releases endorphins, also known as the “feel-good” hormones, which help improve your mood and reduce anxiety. Whether it’s an intense workout or a gentle movement, staying active can help clear your mind and boost your overall well-being.
Best stress-relieving exercises:
- Yoga: Combines movement, breathing, and mindfulness to reduce tension and promote relaxation.
- Strength training: Lifting weights or doing bodyweight exercises can provide a sense of accomplishment and boost confidence.
- Dancing: A fun way to get your heart rate up while releasing pent-up stress.
2. Take a Walk: A Simple Yet Powerful Stress Reliever
I personally feel quite anxious on Sundays. For me, going for a walk when I am feeling this way has been the best way to relieve my anxious feelings. Walking is one of the easiest ways to de-stress, and it comes with numerous benefits for both the body and mind. A walk in nature, often called “forest bathing,” has been shown to reduce stress hormones, improve mood, and enhance overall well-being.
Tips for stress-free walking:
- Go outside: Fresh air and natural surroundings can be incredibly calming.
- Stay warm while walking in the Winter. Check out this article on my winter walking essentials. The cold does not have to keep you inside.
- Listen to calming music or a podcast: Engaging your mind while walking can help shift your focus away from stressors.
- Practice mindfulness: Pay attention to your breath, the sensation of your feet hitting the ground, and the sounds around you.
3. Read Your Stress Away
If you know me, you know reading is one of my favorite things to do but it is also a proven way to reduce stress! Reading is a fantastic way to escape from daily worries and immerse yourself in another world. Whether it’s fiction, self-help, or poetry, reading can help lower stress levels, improve focus, and provide a mental break. Be sure to check out this list of my favorite non-fiction books. And stay tuned for my list of my all time favorite fiction books.
How to make reading a stress-relief habit:
- Set aside quiet time: Create a cozy reading nook where you can unwind.
- Choose books that uplift you: Whether it’s a lighthearted novel or an inspirational book, find what soothes you.
- Use reading as a bedtime ritual: Reading before bed can help you relax and improve sleep quality.
4. Coloring: A Creative Way to Relax
Adult coloring books have gained popularity as a powerful stress-relief tool. Engaging in a creative activity like coloring can help calm the mind, promote mindfulness, and bring a sense of peace. I do love coloring and it is a great way to relieve stress. I even made my own coloring book that you can get on Amazon. Grab a coloring book and a set of markers* and you can start to relax immediately. It’s also easy to bring along with you.
Benefits of coloring for stress relief:
- Encourages mindfulness: Focusing on colors and patterns helps you stay present in the moment.
- Reduces anxiety: The repetitive motion of coloring can have a meditative effect.
- Enhances creativity: Tapping into your artistic side can be a fun and fulfilling way to relax.

Stress is a natural part of life, but how we handle it makes all the difference.
