Weight Lifting 101- What you need to start

If you are a complete beginner to weight lifting, these are some of the equipment essentials I highly recommend for you. It’s the perfect time to ask Santa for them. Also, remember you can build up your home equipment slowly. I started with just some weights and I keep adding more equipment.

  1. Weights- I recommend you purchase a set that has a variety of sizes because you will need them for different exercises and body parts. You will also want to be able to increase the weight you are using as you progress. If you have been really good this year and Santa is going to splurge on you, I highly recommend this set. It has 5 sets of dumbbells in 5 lbs, 10 lbs, 15 lbs and 20 lbs. It also comes with the rack for easy storage. You can click on the picture to order the item.

If this is too much for you to start, try this smaller set. It is the perfect set for beginners.

You could also just order some individual sets of dumbbells in the weights you want. These come in different weights starting with 1 lb and going up to 20 lbs. They also have a few sets.

  1. Next, you will want an exercise mat. This is the one that I own and use everyday.
  1. I would recommend that you try to invest in a bench. You can always use the floor or an exercise ball for exercises that require a bench. Here is the bench that I have and I love it because it can also be used as a step and for hip thrusts.
  1. I would also recommend you get some exercise bands and booty bands.

These are better for lower body

.These are better for upper body.

I use these resistance bands for a lot of exercises and this set also comes with the smaller bands.

The final thing I would recommend for beginners is an adjustable kettlebell. This is not a necessity but it is good for doing certain exercises, like kettlebell swings, squats, deadlifts, back rows, etc.
